Programs
Scholarships
AKA ACD helps fund the futures of Austin area students by awarding scholarships each year. We provide scholarship opportunities for African-American young women to help them reach their full potential. We celebrate the achievements of African-American young men by awarding a scholarship to a young man who has excelled academically and as a leader in his school and community. We’ve also contributed to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), including Austin’s own Huston-Tillotson University, funding $5,000 in annual scholarships in recent years. Many of our scholarship recipients are first generation college students who are changing the trajectory of their lives.
Project GREEN
In 2008, AKA ACD established Project GREEN (Growing Responsible Environmentalists by meeting Educational Needs), a service program to better meet the educational needs of Austin students. Every year, we provide backpacks filled with school supplies for every student at Oak Springs Elementary and Texas Preparatory Austin. We also purchase items to fulfill teachers’ wish lists. We recently expanded the program to provide additional teaching aids to improve reading and writing skills and to facilitate remote learning as required during the pandemic.
Community Service
AKA ACD helps fund the charitable causes of other organizations with a shared commitment to serve the Austin community. We’ve built a network of community partners and support their work in the community for greater impact.
We are collaborating with Beta Psi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated to help combat student food insecurity through the Childhood Hunger Initiative Power Pack (AKA CHIPP™) program. AKA CHIPP provides weekend and holiday meals (power packs) to students experiencing food insecurity. We partner with Hope Austin to provide 52 students at Norma Simms Elementary School with power packs each week. We plan to expand the program to another school in the upcoming school year.
